Our Egg Donor Screening Process

In vitro fertilization (IVF) with donated eggs has helped countless women achieve successful pregnancies. In order to increase success rates for our IVF patients and ensure their safety, we utilize a comprehensive egg donor screening process at Pacific Surrogacy and Egg Donation in Tarzana, CA. Not only do we take the physical health of potential donors into account, we also evaluate their psychological wellbeing, lifestyle habits, and risks for certain genetic conditions. If you are considering IVF with egg donation, we will take the time to discuss all of your questions and concerns during a personal consultation. Reach out to a member of our staff today to schedule an appointment and learn more.

Rigorous Applicant Screening

We receive a steady stream of applications from prospective egg donors. After carefully reviewing all applications, we interview potential candidates and only select the best to include in our donor database. During the donor selection process, IVF patients will view the profiles of a diverse range of healthy young women between the ages of 20 and 29. Each profile contains a photo and basic information, including the donor’s ethnicity and a physical description specifying height and weight. Once the initial donor selection is made, our extensive donor testing process begins. Screening takes place privately, with the prospective donor and egg recipient each remaining anonymous.

Evaluating Your Potential Donor

Before moving forward with a donor, tests are performed to rule out potential fertility problems and ensure optimal physical and mental health. This process typically includes:

  • A detailed review of the donor's medical and psychiatric history
  • An evaluation of the health history of the donor's biological family
  • A complete physical exam that includes urine and blood testing
  • Testing to check blood type and hormone levels
  • Testing for infectious diseases
  • A gynecological exam with ultrasound
  • A psychological evaluation

This thorough screening process will help us to identify a donor that will give you the best chance for a full term pregnancy and a healthy baby. In addition to assessing the donor's overall general health, we will also screen for specific lifestyle problems, including the potential use of recreational and prescription drugs, alcohol, and nicotine. In addition, the ideal donor should demonstrate sound mental health and not have a history of psychological or psychiatric problems. She must also be fully prepared to undergo the complete egg donation process without great emotional concerns or feelings of regret.

Additional Testing

In many cases, genetic testing of the donor is also ordered. With these tests, we can rule out many genetically transmitted diseases, including Tay-Sachs, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, cystic fibrosis (CF), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and fragile X syndrome. Some patients prefer universal genetic testing, while in other cases, specific inherited conditions are targeted and screened.
